i am a therapist who works with men who perpetrate violence. I have talked with thousands of men. One of the most consistent stories that i have heard, when discussing their upbringing, is the time that they used violence in their relationship with their father. Many men have many reasons; end abuse being perpetrated by their father, establish dominance in the home or household, or using violence as a way to bring about a means of further dialog.
I make no judgement, especially given how often it seems necessary to move people forward; and i am disquieted and troubled for men. As a father, i hope to never hear my boys say that it took violence for me to hear them.
